Many abusers who inject anabolic steroids may use nonsterile injection techniques or share contaminated needles with other abusers. In addition, some steroid preparations are manufactured illegally under nonsterile conditions. These factors put abusers at risk for acquiring lifethreatening viral infections, such as HIV and hepatitis B and C. Abusers also can develop endocarditis, a bacterial infection that causes a potentially fatal inflammation of the inner lining of the heart. Bacterial infections also can cause pain and abscess formation at injection sites.

The more specific category of steroids are known as androgenic (promoting male characteristics) anabolic (tissue building) steroids (the category of drugs). Today, there are more than 100 distinct types of anabolic steroids that have been created, and each one requires a prescription to be utilized legally in the United States of America. People also often mix a few distinct types of steroids in a technique well-known as stacking . By making this, users consider that the different steroids will interact to make an effect on muscle size that’s bigger than the effects of utilizing each drug separately.

Anabolic steroid abuse can result in permanent damage to the heart, liver, and kidneys. In males, steroid abuse can decrease sperm production, shrink the testicles, cause impotence, and produce irreversible breast enlargement (gynecomastia).
